Rhapsody  for alto saxophone and audio

Tony Davis

Rhapsody was commissioned by saxophonist Alex Mitchell and completed in March 2005. This is the third in a series of exuberant chamberdance pieces for solo saxophone and audio.

The solo line is based around a series of melodic jazz enclosures which constantly spiral and evolve throughout the piece. It celebrates the compelling rhythmic language of modern-day dance music and seeks to present a new interpretation of an early definition of ‘rhapsody’ – ‘a high-flown composition or utterance’. The original phrase to which constant reference was made during the composition process was the need to ‘reach fever pitch’ – this piece never lets up.

“Alistair (Parnell) on EWI was jaw droppingly amazing on Tony Davis’ Rhapsody.”

Nottingham Saxophone Spectacular, Alison Owen-Morley, June 2012
